CHURCH:

BOONESBOROUGH (BOONE)

The Boonesborough Church was organized by 1854 or earlier, as two of its members helped in the council to organize Sharon Church in March 1855. The only names of people whom we can presently prove were members of this church are John A. Crawley, Lafayette Baugus, P. G. Nicholson, E. F. Nicholson, and Job Garbison. The records of Sharon Church for April 1871, show that Bro. John A. Crawley presented himself for membership, because the Boonesborough Church had become scattered and unable to meet.

Minutes of the Western Association for 1869 list this church as having 9 members. Elder Job Garbison, of Boonesborough, was probably the pastor at that time.

The Boonesborough Church hosted the Western Association in 1861. The location, as announced and published in the Signs of the Times, is given as Story County, Iowa, which indicates that some of the members may have lived there. Very little information is presently available regarding this church.

The town of Boonesborough was originally called Montana, but the name was changed in honor of Major Nathan Boone (son of Daniel Boone). After the railroad depot was built about four miles east of Boonesborough, the city of Boone flourished, and the town of Boonesborough has now become West Boone.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Baugus, Crawley, Garbison, Nicholson (very incomplete list due to loss of records).

DES MOINES

A church called Des Moines, near Boone, was organized in 1855, and became a member of the Mt. Pleasant Association.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Hand, Spicklemire (very incomplete list due to loss of records).
