CHURCHES:

LITTLE CEDAR

Little Cedar Church was organized near Nora Springs in about 1848. Although the records of the church have not been located, the obituary of Rebecca Tatum (who with her husband, Elder James Tatum, were among the charter members of this church) states that they came to Iowa in 1848 and were constituted into a church called Little Cedar near Nora Springs.

The Little Cedar Church probably participated in the organization of the Turkey River Old School Baptist Association in June 1859. The last time the church hosted the association was in June 1876. In the statistical table of the earliest available minutes of the Turkey River Association, for June 1874, Little Cedar Church was listed with a membership of 30.

The pastors of the church [probably] included the following: Elders James Tatum, James B. Burch, and Mitchell L. Jackson. Elder E. A. Norton attended here regularly for several years, but we do not have proof that he served as pastor.

We have not yet been able to determine exactly where the church met during its early history. After the turn of this century, the church met in a small building which was constructed on a lot purchased by Elder M. L. Jackson in March 1903, located at 112 N. Seminary Ave., in Nora Springs. The funeral service of Elder Jackson's wife was held there in February 1904. The property was sold by Elder Jackson in March 1909, to Mr. Henry Buckmann. According to a 1975 county history, the building was later moved to 26 North Seminary Avenue and converted to use as a private dwelling. It appears that the church had ceased to meet by about 1912.
