for Primitive Baptist Churches in Iroquois County, Illinois

CHURCHES:

Milford, Iroquois Co., Illinois, Nov. 15th & 16th, 1842. "After preaching three times (in Marion Co., Indiana) I rode on to Illinois, and on the second Sunday in November preached at Concord, which is on the Iroquois river, Iroquois Co., Ill. Thence on to Sugar Creek, a beautiful prairie interspersed with delightful groves, where I found a few Old Virginia Baptists, with whom I am now; and it is said that I am the first Regular Baptist preacher that has passed through this region. I preached last night and am to try again tonight. I will now finish my letter, and wish you to publish it, that my friends may know how and where I am. I have been fifty-three days from home; have tried to preach fifty-six times; have traveled 686 miles, and have enjoyed better health, for the greater part of the time, than what is usual for me. This is a new country . . . here in the Grand Prairie we have dry, rolling land and as good roads as can be found anywhere. This country is but thinly settled, on account of the scarcity of timber; very few live in the open prairie, nearly all settle in and about the timbered land. The groves are few and far between." - Elder Benjamin G. Avery.
