CHURCHES:

RICHLAND CREEK (1842)

Richland Creek Church was organized on the second Saturday in May 1842, at the home of Peter Roberson, in Newton County. The first order of business was to ordain Elder Edward L. Roberson to the work of the ministry, which was done by laying on of hands by the presbytery composed of Elder Samuel Fitzgerald, moderator, Deacon William Blythe, and John Townsend, clerk. The charter members constituted were Elder Edward L. Roberson, James Simms, Wiley W. Osborn, Calvin Roberson, John Mann, Robert Sims, Rebecca Roberson, Margaret Simms, Elizabeth Roberson, Jane Payne, Sally Townsend, and John Townsend. The church soon united with an association, probably the Center Creek Association.

In December 1842 the church agreed to build a hewed log meeting house, with dimensions of 24' by 30' on Richland Creek, in Jasper Co., near Clisby Roberson's field. A deed was mentioned in the minutes in 1848, and reference is made to weatherboarding it in 1855.

The first pastor was Elder Edward L. Roberson. He was followed by Elders Thomas Henson, Maximilian Mabry, and Thomas Wood, the last named being ordained in June 1860.
