CHURCH:

MT. PLEASANT (ORIGINALLY AT BELOIT/LATER NEAR SOUTH WAYNE)(1846)

"The First Regular Baptist Church of Beloit" was organized at Beloit, in Rock Co., Wisconsin, in 1846, with eight charter members, viz., Robert Jeffers, Nancy Jeffers, Nelson Jeffers, Lydia Allison Jeffers, Andrew J. Norton, Mary Norton, Francis Gholson, and Nancy Gholson. It appears that these members had joined Little Flock Church near Scales Mound, Illinois, and then were lettered out to organize a separate church. The church united with the First Northwestern Association of Regular Baptists, in 1848. In 1852 all the members but one moved to Lafayette County, near Spafford/South Wayne, Wisconsin, about six miles north of Warren, Illinois. The name of the church was then changed to Mt. Pleasant. Elder Andrew J. Norton was ordained to the ministry, at Little Flock church, Scales Mound, Illinoism, in 1852, and shortly afterward moved his membership back to this church. He built a small meeting house for the church about that time. Elder Nelson Jeffers was ordained by this church in 1871, by a presbytery composed of Elders Henry Smith, Walter Baker, and Benjamin Sallee. In October 1874, Elder Anthony E. McKnight was ordained to the ministry in this church. The church prospered sufficiently that members were dismissed to organize all or part of five other churches. The Mt. Pleasant Church dissolved in 1885.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Brown, Gholson, Horton, Jeffers, Layton, Lewis, McKnight, Morehouse, Norton, Parsons, Piersol, Sallee, Stone (very incomplete list due to loss of records).
