BIG SPRINGS

Big Springs Church was organized on the first Saturday in May 1878, at the home of Brother Joseph Harris, near Summerville, in Union County. The charter members were Elder George E. Mayfield, Joseph Harris, Mary Ann Harris, Reuben T. Couch, Amelia A. Couch, John Huffman, Percilla Huffman, and Mary Ann Cummins. On Sunday Brother George Grimmett came forward and was received for baptism. The presbytery was composed of Elders G. E. Mayfield and James Bassett, and Brother H. J. Hale. The church had a neat frame meeting house in Elgin, Oregon, but later sold it and met in homes of the members.
