Z I O N ' S A D V O C A T E
(Established in 1854)

The first issue was issued at Front Royal, Virginia, January 1854, by Elder John Clark, who was editor for about thirty years except for the period from 1864-1870. After his death, in 1882, it was published for several years by Elder C. H. Waters (1849-1920) as editor, and Bro. J. G. Wiltshire as publisher. In February 1891 the paper was purchased by Elder T. S. Dalton (1846-1931), who merged it with the Herald of Truth, and served as editor until 1898. Elder John R. Daily (1854-1920) then served as editor for eight years. In May 1906 Dr. C. H. Waters resumed the editorship for several years. Elder R. H. Pittman purchased the paper in May 1919, and in January 1921 purchased The Messenger of Truth from Elder F. P. Branscome. In March 1923, the Gospel Messenger was merged with it.

Vol. 3, No. 3 is dated September 15, 1883, so this paper evidently began in about August 1880. In 1883, Elder T. S. Dalton (1846-1931), was the editor and proprietor, at Union City, Tennessee. He was still the editor in January 1891, at Benton, Illinois, when he moved to Stanleyton, Virginia, and merged it with Zions Advocate, of which he served as editor, or co-editor with Elder (Dr.) C. H. Waters (1849-1920).

T H E B A P T I S T W A T C H M A N

The Baptist Watchman began at Jasper, Alabama, in 1868. It was moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1869, then to Nashville, Tennessee in 1872. Elders R. W. Fain (1807-1876) and B. E. Mullens (1831-1895) were editors, and Elder J. Bunyan Stephens (1836-1919) associate editor, in 1872. Publication suspended in the fall of 1880.

The Old Baptist Banner began publication in 1838, at Nashville, Tenn., with Elder Washington Lowe as founder and editor. In 1840 the name was changed to The Correspondent. Elder Lowe served as editor until 1839. Elder John M. Watson (1798-1866) then moved the paper to Murfreesboro, Tennesssee, and probably served as editor until his death. Elder R. W. Fain then served as editor, probably assisted or followed by C. W. Nance at Nashville, Tennessee.

We have ten reels of microfilm from the Historical Society of Missouri which include volumes 1 (1874) through 36 (1910), but they are incomplete. Our own paper copies are shown for each year below using month and day, and copies from other microfilms are marked with issue #s. Holdings at the University of Missouri, Historical Society of Missouri, 1020 Lowry Street, Columbia, MO 65201, included a collection of hardbound volumes of the Messenger of Peace, and supposedly they were microfilmed, along with other volumes loaned to them to be filmed. We were told, much to our dismay, that they then burned their hardbound volumes.

Elder John E. Goodson, Sr., was editor from November 15, 1874, until his death September 16, 1892.

Elder Walter Cash became co-editor with Elder Goodson Sr., in August 1890; he later bought the paper and moved it to Marceline, and still later, to St. Joseph, Missouri. He was editor through August 1934. He died May 18, 1937.

Edited by Elder Lemuel Potter, 1841-1897, of Grayville, Illinois, and later of Ft. Branch, Indiana, the Church Advocate first appeared as a semi-monthly in the Fall of 1872 (the November 1872 issue was Vol. 1, No.4). Between 1872 and 1878, four volumes (or parts of volumes) appeared, including at least parts of the years 1872, 1873, 1874, 1877, and 1878. Publication of the paper was suspended in 1879 (the last issue being Vol. 4, No. 15), due to the printer thinking he could not afford to continue it, as his income was from a percentage of the subscriptions. In February 1892 (almost thirteen years later), the paper was revived, as Volume 5, and continued until it was merged with the Primitive Monitor, in December 1897. In 1892, 1893, 1896, and 1897, the Church Advocate was published in pamphlet size. In 1894 and 1895 it was published in newspaper size.
We have no original issues from 1872 through 1876; but we do have 1873, Vol 1, No. 10, in digital format. Our holdings include Vol. 3, No. 1, Oct. 1, 1877 through Vol. 3, No. 14, April 15, 1878. We have Feb. 1892-Dec. 1892 and the full year of 1893 in bound volumes. We have loose issues, as follows, after 1893: May 1, 1894; July 15, Aug 1, Nov 15, 1895; March, June, July, August, September, October, November and December 1896; Jan 1, 15, Feb 1, 15, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, and October 1897. We also have 1896, Vol. 9, No. 2 in digital format.

Editors: Elder Thomas J. Bazemore, of Macon, Georgia, was the founder and first editor, serving for about one year. The first issue appeared in October 1878. Brother J. A. Crews became proprietor and editor with Elder Bazemore in April 1879. Elder J. R. Respess, (born October 2, 1831, died 1895) followed Elder Bazemore as editor. Elder William M. Mitchell, (born January 10, 1819, died February 26, 1901) became associated with Elder Respess in 1881, and Elder J. E. W. Henderson (born January 23, 1839) in 1886, and Elder Sylvester Hassell (born July 28, 1842, died August 18, 1928) in February 1892. Elder Hassell purchased the paper in 1896 from the family of Elder J. R. Respess. During the time Elder Hassell served as editor, associate editors included Elders James H. Oliphant, Lee Hanks, and G. W. Stewart. In February 1920 Elder Hassell sold the paper to Elder Z. C. Hull, of Atlanta, Georgia, who published it under the same name for about three years, and then sold it to Elder R. H. Pittman, in April 1923. Elder Pittman merged it with his paper, which was already called "Advocate & Messenger" as a result of the merging of Zion's Advocate and Messenger of Truth.

1891, but suspended after a few months. Elder J. G. Webb revived
it in 1892. Later editors included Elder T. L. Webb, Sr., Elder

associate editors and staff writers through the span of 90 years
of its existence. We have a microfilm which was purchased from

Elder Daniel Parker began this monthly publication, Church's
Advocate (masthead: "Truth is Powerful"), in October 1829. The
printing was done by Elihu Stout, at Vincennes, Indiana. The
first volume (bound zerox copies) is complete in our files. The
second and last volume of this periodical for the period October
1830 through September 1831 has been microfilmed, and we have a
copy of the same. There was supposedly a 13th number for one of
the volumes, which we do not have.

(The first issue of The Western Predestinarian Baptist was dated January 21, 1842, and continued to be published as late as May 15, 1846, and possibly a few years longer. Elder Richard M. Newport served as moderator of the Wabash District Association as late as 1846, but afterward moved to southwestern Missouri, where he continued to labor in the ministry until his death. His experience was published in the Signs of the Times, and reprinted in 1888, in the Primitive Monitor, and is available in pamphlet form.

A detailed study of the places and manner of its publication has been compiled by Mr. Terry Tanner (now deceased), of Hamill & Barker Antiquarian Booksellers, 1719 Howard St., Evanston, Illinois 60202, which we have in our files.

Zions Advocate reported in 1857 that the Western Evangelist had ceased publication, Vol. 13, No. 10, April 1857, may have been the last issue, although the printer promised to published Nos. 11 and 12.

The editor, Elder J. M. Mewborn, has bound volumes for many of the years after it became magazine size; but he only has scattered issues for the early period when it was in tabloid form.
The Primitive Baptist Library at Elon College, NC, has an
incomplete set beginning with 1873. We do not have a detailed
listing of their holdings of each year, whether or not complete).
The Christian Baptist Library, Atwood, Tennessee, also had many bound volumes, beginning in the 1890's. They were sold to the Southern Baptist Historical Commission, Nashville, Tennessee. The American Baptist Historical Library, Rochester, New
York (now Macon, Georgia), has only Vol. 2, No. 13 (June 1, 1869) for the period 1867-1870. (We have a zerox copy of this). They have bound volumes for many later years.

Elder Starke Dupuy:

"Dupuy's Hymns and Spiritual Songs" was originally compiled by Elder Starke Dupuy (a Baptist minister who lived in Kentucky and Tennessee) in about 1818. The book was revised even after his death. The title page of one of our two copies is missing, but the two page preface is signed by J. M. P. (John Mason Peck), November 1843, Rockspring, Illinois, and states that about 100,000 copies had been put in circulation by that date. The copy which contains the title page shows that it was printed by John P. Morton & Co., and copyrighted by Morton and Griswold in the District Court of Kentucky.

Brother A. Barrow and Elder Ira Turner:

Songs of Praise and Practical Life, c. 1896, by A. Barrow, was published by Walter Cash, Marceline, Mo., 60 pp. of hymns (text only); the booklet also contains 28 pages of articles. May have been used more as a book of poetry than hymns.

Also, Cheerful Hymns, c. 1902, published by A. Barrow and Elder Ira Turner, contains only 16 hymns, most of which appear to have been written or arranged by Barrow and/or Turner. One hymn by Sarah E. Runkle, and one by C. H. Stuckey, are also included.

Elder Peter Long:

The Western Harp, or Hymns, Spiritual Songs, and Sacred Poems, on a variety of subjects, by Peter Long, editor of "Western Evangelist," copyright, 1848. First edition contained 116 pp., and is located at Illinois State Historical Library. Fourth edition published at Rock Well, Illinois, 1851, 192 pp. 12.8 cm., and is located at Henry E. Huntington Library and Museum, San Marino, California (818-405-2141). Verso of title page of fourth edition contains preface to second edition; preface to this edition dated "Rock Well, Aug. 1st, 1850. No musical notation in the hymnal. We do not have a copy of this hymnal.

Isaac Watts' Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs:

Watts (on spine); psalms for each of the 150 psalms (first 12 1/2 are missing); hymns in three "Books." Pages also missing at end. Published in 1718. (The oldest book in our Library.)

Watts & Rippon Hymnal:

Psalms and Hymns of Dr. Watts, arranged by Dr. Rippon, published by Elder William Butler, Zanesville, Ohio, for the Muskingum Baptist Association, 1860.

Elder Isaac N. Vanmeter:

Pocket Hymns, published in 1867, by Register Printing House, Galesburg, Illinois. 345 hymns, of which about 100 were composed by Elder Vanmeter. We have a bound zerox copy of the original in the Library of Congress, in Washington, D. C. There is also an original copy of the hymnal at Princeton Theological Seminary, Speer Divinity Library, Princeton, NJ 08540. We have republished a very limited edition of this hymnal made up from our zeroxes.

Elder Wilson Thompson:

Baptist Hymn Book, c. 1844, 1850 edition, published at Cincinnati, Ohio, by E. Shepard. [In 1844 the Des Moines River Association of Iowa recommended to its churches "to obtain the new selection of hymns and spiritual songs now being published by Elder Wilson Thompson."] We have only one copy of this hymnal. But for this unbelieving age his writings are far too sound in doctrine to be sufficiently popular for republication. If his works were not in print, there would be no good reason why I should write these pages, and I surely would not do so.

16. GOOD WORKS. 1924. 50 pp. Notes and comments on their importance and proper place.

17. THE COVENANT OF GRACE. 1925. 56 pp. Comments and extracts on this divine arrangement for the redemption of the chosen subjects of salvation, or the divine arrangement for the salvation of sinners.
