CHURCHES:

NEVIL'S CREEK (STATESBORO)(1790)

Nevil's Creek Church was constituted May 17, 1790, by Elder Alexander Loote and others. It is believed to be the oldest Primitive Baptist Church still in existence in the State of Georgia. John Nevil, a Revolutionary War soldier, is buried in the front yard of the church; both the church and the creek obtained their name from him. The church building then standing at this place was burned by the northern troops during Sherman's march to the sea in the War between the State. Elder Aaron Munley was a member of this church and ordained here; he was a brother of color, and constituted and served the first colored Primitive Baptist churches in Georgia.
