CHURCHES:

UNION (FORT VALLEY) (1825)

Union Church was organized in 1825. The first meeting was November 12, 1825, with Elder Jonathan Neal serving as the first moderator, and John Blackstone as clerk. The land for the church was donated by Jasper Taylor, who also furnished his slaves to help in the construction of the building. The material used in the building was all hand hewn, hauled by oxen, and put together with wooden pegs. Wooden shutters covered the windows. Some slaves united with the church, along with many white people from the community. The half wall used to separate the races during the services in the early 1800's can still be seen in the building. Among the many pastors who served this church was Elder Yanacy Jodan, who served from 1915 until the church closed in 1940. In 1943 Elder W. H. Hancock revived the work at Union by preaching in the homes of people in the community. He pastored the church for 42 years. The church is in the Echeconee Association. Elder Frank King was the pastor in 1998.
